We know plants, and we know what plants are available.
Effective garden design is attained when the garden has met the needs, goals and desires of the users or owners of the garden. The most important consideration in garden design is how the garden will be used, followed closely by the desired style and interests of the owner, and the way the garden space will connect to the surrounding natural environment. A garden should be designed so that it is not only functional, but also beautiful with little required maintenance. The right design will also enhance the value of a property greatly.
There are many factors that go into designing a landscape. Before choosing and planting trees and shrubs, careful attention should be given to the site itself. Each site should be evaluated for grading and drainage, space and size, sunlight exposure, overhead wires, and soil quality. After site evaluation, choose plant material that will adapt well to that particular location. When choosing plants, certain horticultural requirements and characteristics such as: season to season appearance, growth habit, growth rate, mature size, maintenance requirements, bloom time, and function need to be considered.
There is a great amount of hard work and time that goes into the growing process of plants and trees. We are not manufacturing plant material in a factory! From seed propagation to the harvesting of trees and shrubs, takes many years. Plant material is pruned year after year, trained and shaped, irrigated, fertilized, transplanted, maintained free of pests, and harvested. So by the time even a small shrub has made its way to your landscape it has gone through extensive care to get there. Since our plant material has been grown to be strong thriving plants we want to make sure that they will have the best opportunity to maintain strength, beauty and quality for the remainder of the plants life in your landscape. Our hope is that you or your customer may enjoy it for years to come. We have created a plant catalog simply listing the most important horticultural characteristics and requirements to assist you with your plant selection so that you may match the needs of a plant to your landscape site.
We are available to assist you in your landscape design. When you are ready to meet with one of our horticultural experts please be prepared with the following materials and information:
- Photographs of the house, buildings, and/or area for design. If possible, please provide images showing both the “close-ups” of potential bedding areas, as well as the scope of the property.
- The exact dimensions (gathered through the use of a tape measure) mapped out on graph paper. Please remember to cite all windows, doors, current walkways, air conditioners, utility meters, etc.
- Indicate the sunlight exposure for all planting areas.
- Make a list of desired plants or plant features you would like to have in the landscape.
Appointments are greatly appreciated and required during the busy spring and summer season. Depending on the extensiveness of your landscape design request, a fee may apply. You will be told in advance if such is the case.
